I don't know if it's the weather or the progesterone I'm taking but I've been off and feeling not like myself. With all the fertility drugs I've been on, my skin is acting up, I'm bloated and my frustrations are becoming more apparent.
A few weeks back, a Naturopath I was seeing before I had my daughter, reached out to me. It was so strange as I had been thinking of her and was wondering if I should reach out to her. She beat me to the punch and we scheduled a brunch to catch up. During our brunch she told me all about the new clinic she was working at and described some new techniques she learned and added to her practice. They are called muscle testing and bioenergetics intolerence elimination (BIE).
Obviously I was unfamiliar with these techniques but she is well aware of my infertility issues and thought maybe I could give it a go. What did I have to lose by checking it out?! She suggested a couple theories to me. One theory was my body was low in progesterone. When the body is stressed it is more concerned about survival, not making a baby. In the situation where stress is high all the time, the body will produce more of the survival (fight or flight) hormone called cortisol in favour of progesterone. Honestly, this would make sense as my anxiety levels have been up and down! Her other theory was that even though I'm taking progesterone, I could not be processing it properly. It's basically like having tons of money and spending it recklessly.
When I visited her at the clinic, we started with some muscle testing. I had to hold my thumb and ring finger firmly together. She then had me hold various food and hormones against my arm while she tried to pry my fingers apart. If they came apart easily then that meant that I was intolerant and if they stayed firmly together then there was no concerns. (I realize this sounds strange!). It was pretty crazy when she was able to pull them apart as I was using strong force to try to fight it.
Anywho, through this process, I learned that I'm highly intolerant to dairy and wheat. I knew this through previous allergy testing but I had slowly reintroduced it into my diet. I usually have cream in my coffee and my 100% rye bread at lunch with my eggs. Apparently, this is no go and could be causing some of the inflammation and lethargy I've been dealing with. We also learned that she was correct and that I had not been processing my progesterone properly. Looking back this could have also been a reason I was not able to hold on to my previous pregnancy.
This is where the electro-acupuncture came in to play. She used the BIE technique which is a non-invasive therapy that restores balance to the body. She applied low electronic frequency to acupuncture points (without the use of needles) and reintroduced progesterone to my body. By doing this she is and I quote "teaching my body to recognize it, see it as a non-stressor and process it better. Kind of like an electronic vaccine. By introducing a bit of a substance into the body at a very low dose, the body gets acquainted with it, and learns how to tolerate it, and process it better."
Really this process is quite scientific!
I left the office a bit more optimistic and with a plan on how to adjust my eating habits. She gave me tons of resources and recipes to try. My goal is to try to eat a more paleo style of diet. I cannot give up my coffee but I have already eliminated the cream and I'm substituting my bread for sweet potato toast. My plan is to come back in two weeks time to see how long this treatment works and recheck my progesterone. Perhaps this is a placebo effect but you know what I'm already feeling better and I'm a little more optimistic with my fertility goals.
Sometimes my cupboard is not perfect and life can get a bit messy but I'm working on ways to try and clean it
I would love to hear from you! Leave me a comment and let me know if you have found success in naturopathic medicine and alternative therapies.
