Taking care of your skin and having a proper skin care routine is so important. I've always made it a priority to wash my makeup off before bed and cleanse again in the morning.
As a teenager, I suffered from severe acne. It was horrible and I had no idea how to get a handle on it. To cover it up, I tried all sorts of heavy makeup which only aggravated it more. It got so bad that there was nothing I could do to hide it. My confidence was at an all time low and it took everything I had to get up and go to school. I tried various products from the pharmacy that either dried out my face or increased the redness from the harsh ingredients. Luckily, after many failed attempts, I booked an appointment to see a dermatologist who was finally able treat my acne.
The dermatologist prescribed me Accutane, which is a strong and controversial drug used to treat acne. It comes with a long list of potential and scary side effects. Luckily the only minor side effect I had was dry skin and chapped lips. After a few months, the acne started to subside and my confidence began to build again. Looking back, I'm sure that my acne was due to hormones and stress that come with being a teenager. However, I decided right then that I would always make skin care my priority.
Throughout the years, I've tried a multitude of products. I have combination skin which is drier in the winter and produces more oil in the summer. I still get the odd breakout around my period but nothing compared to what it used to be. I also switch out my products during the summer/winter months. However, I do have a couple tried and true products that I use all year round. I'm sharing these and my winter skincare regime with you below.
To remove my makeup before bed, I always start with Dermalogica Precleanse. This product is AMAZING! It's one of my tried and true and I've been using it for years. I put a couple pumps on my hands and massage it all over my face (including my eyes). It melts away ALL of your make up including waterproof mascara! I rinse my hands with water and massage again to create a bit of a lather and then rinse it all off.
Next, I use the Dermalogica Ultracalming Cleanser. It feels so soft on the skin and does not leave my skin feeling dry or irritated. I have tried so many cleansers that strip my skin of it's natural oil and leave it red and sensitive. I love this cleanser because it literally does what it says, calms and cleanses. This is another one of my tried and true that I use morning and night.
To hydrate and prepare my skin for the rest of my regime, I use the La Mer Treatment Lotion. It's essentially a liquid hydration that absorbs quickly and nourishes my skin. I've heard so much about the La Mer line but the high price tag had always deterred me. Late last year, I was chatting with another mom who's skin is absolutely flawless. She was passionate about the La Mer brand and had been using it for years. I went online that evening to read more reviews which persuaded me to give the brand a try.
A part of me wanted to dislike this brand because of the steep price tag but I was instantly hooked. Their products have since become a part of my routine. Following The Treatment Lotion, I use the Regenerating Serum and finally the Créme de la Mer. I cannot say enough about the serum. The $445 price is insane but the difference it has made in my skin is priceless. It has dramatically improved my skin's texture and the redness has dissipated. It glides on my face like a silk scarf. Now I get compliments on my skin which has NEVER happened to me before. A little goes a long way and I only use the serum at night. The recommendation is to use it twice a day after cleansing but I try to make it last as long as possible. If you purchase anything from this line, then I would undoubtedly recommend the serum.
The Créme de la mar is the brand's star moisturizer and the best winter moisturizer I've ever used. It's soft and hydrating but never feels too heavy and goes so well under my makeup. I love the application of warming the cream in your hands and pressing onto the skin. The process is so healing and calms me before bedtime.
